Champions League: Rangnick Reveals Setback For Manchester United Ahead Of Atletico Madrid Clash
KEY POINTS
- Edinson Cavani has played just one game this month
- Man Utd is set to travel to Madrid for their UCL game Wednesday
- Matic and Pogba recently returned after long injury layoffs
Ralf Rangnick offered a crucial update on Edinson Cavani ahead of Manchester United's Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
In what is a setback for Manchester United, veteran striker Cavani is set to miss his side's trip to the Spanish capital due to an injury, Rangnick confirmed in a pre-match conference.
"Edi will not make the trip. He didn't train and hasn't been training for a couple of weeks. He has problems with his groin and, as long as he doesn't feel ready to fully sprint, it doesn't make sense to train him," Rangnick said in the press conference, according to Man Utd's website.
The Uruguay international striker has only made one appearance for the Red Devils in the last month, which came during the 1-1 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor on Feb. 8.
Manchester United finished at the top of Group F in the Champions League with three wins, two draws and a loss.
Rangnick's side recently defeated Leeds 4-2 in the Premier League. Harry Maguire and Co. will look to carry the momentum to Wanda Metropolitano Stadium when they take on home side Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash.
Paul Pogba recently returned from a long injury layoff and the Old Trafford side will hope to see his best in Madrid. Nemanja Matic also made his return from an injury break and was on the bench at Elland Road. Defender Phil Jones is also now eligible to play in the competition after being added to the Champions League squad.
Manchester United will hope to see Cristiano Ronaldo take charge once again on the field as he has netted a goal in each of his Champions League appearances for the Red Devils this season. Ronaldo has scored six goals in eight Champions League matches and overall, the Portuguese star has netted 15 goals and three assists for the Red Devils in the 2021-22 campaign.
