  • Bruno Fernandes missed the Spurs game last week due to COVID-19
  • Fernandes has been involved in 23 goals this season
  • Man Utd will host Atletico in UCL on Tuesday

Bruno Fernandes is in a "last-minute race" to be fit for Manchester United's upcoming Champions League game.

Fernandes recently missed Manchester United's Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur due to COVID-19.

The Red Devils drew 1-1 in their Round of 16 first leg against Atletico Madrid at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium last month. Ralf Rangnick's side will look to edge out these opponents at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

In a pre-match conference, Rangnick was asked about Fernandes' availability and the interim boss replied, "I don't know. Luke hopefully will be back in training Monday and Bruno we will have to wait and see until Tuesday. This will probably be a last-minute race with him – due to Covid."

Cristiano Ronaldo's hat-trick helped Manchester United defeat Tottenham 3-2 in the Premier League on Saturday. Another midfielder, Scott McTominay, was missing from the game at Old Trafford.

"With Scotty, I hope so but he had some muscular problems with his calf. That's why we decided not to play him [against Spurs], because Scotty, quite like Fred, is only valuable if he can perform with 100% of his physical capacity," added Rangnick.

Rangnick will hope to have Fernandes back, considering the Portuguese midfielder has provided 14 assists and has scored nine goals in 36 matches for the Red Devils across all competitions. Out of the 14 assists, seven have come in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, after scoring just one goal in 10 matches, Ronaldo returned to form against Spurs as he registered his career's 59th hat-trick. The three goals also saw the Manchester United superstar become the all-time leading scorer in professional soccer with 807 goals.

The all-time top goalscorer title in soccer is much contested and FIFA does not keep an official record. However, according to the world governing body, Ronaldo has surpassed Austro-Czech forward Josef Bican, who had scored 805 goals during a career that lasted from 1931 to 1955, The Athletic reported.
