Chance The Rapper Concert: 90 People Hospitalized After Connecticut Show

Ambulances rushed over 90 people to the hospital following a Connecticut show starring Chance the Rapper Friday, The Hartford Courant reported.

Hot 93.7’s Hot Jam concert at Xfinity Theater in Hartford held over an estimated 21,000 fans. The show included musicians PnB Rock, ANoyd and Kyle.

Those hospitalized were dangerously intoxicated and some were found unconscious, Deputy Police Chief Brian Foley said. Hartford police charged 50 people with underage drinking.

"Parents: Did you drop your teen off at the concert tonight," Foley tweeted Friday with footage of the parking lot. "This is what it looks like. & HPD is enforcing underage drinking in the lots."

The number of people hospitalized last Friday night surpassed the usual amount for a concert in Hartford, Foley said.

"A 'typical' concert is around 20-30 transports. 60 would be very bad. We had 70 once and 90 last night," Foley said. "It depends on the act that is in town and the fan base age."

"The fan base last night appeared to be in the late teens and early 20s," he added. "Tailgating, partying and excessive alcohol consumption was extremely prevalent."

The amount hospitalized was so high that Hartford’s ambulance team requested help. Ambulances transported some to hospitals in New Britain, Farmington and Manchester, Fire Capt. Raul Ortiz told The Courant.

"HPD has made a high number of Underage Drinking Referrals, "Foley tweeted. "I'm told there was an extraordinary number of EMS transports of severe ETOH. Additional steps will have to be taken to address these issues at these concerts."

Ortiz cited that his department’s incident commander thought the number admitted to the hospital was higher than 90. He estimated that ambulances transferred over 100 people to nearby hospitals.

Hartford’s Children's Medical Center treated at least 15 patients from the show, mostly teenagers, including a 19-year-old man with a blood alcohol level of about 0.5 — according to assistant hospital director John Brancato. The teenager was so intoxicated that he had to be restrained, according to Brancato. The hospital eventually admitted the patient to intensive care for precautionary measures.

"It's just crazy," Brancato said. "It's not like adult social drinking, where you're out with friends or family and you have a glass of wine or beer, or two, or three. "You never know what else could happen if a patient is so compromised they can't protect themselves," he said. "It's just bad in every way."

"With the kids who get brought into the hospital, they drink with one sole purpose, and they don't understand anything about how their bodies will handle it," he added. "They have a time frame and they want to get blotto before they go in."

Those charged with underage drinking and given "promised to appear" summons are expected in Community Court in Hartford Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Foley told the Courant.

Saturday’s Lady Antebellum concert in Hartford only had seven people hospitalized and 18 underage drinking tickets, Foley said Sunday. The concert at the Xfinity Center Saturday was anticipated to be less hectic than the Chance the Rapper show.
