KEY POINTS
- Charles LeClerc won the second race of the Formula 1 virtual racing tournament.
- Jenson Button and Alex Albon also participated for the first time in the tournament
- Nicholas Latifi finished in 10th place
Charles LeClerc took victory win the second Formula 1 virtual Grand Prix, which was done at Albert Park in place of the postponed Vietnam Grand Prix.
After the first virtual Grand Prix held on the Bahrain circuit featured two of the current F1 drivers, more of the Formula 1 grid opted to participate in the second race.
The venue was Australia considering Vietnam is not a circuit in the F1 2019 game. LeClerc gave a great performance for Ferrari after qualifying in the second position.
He began from pole after Renault's Formula 2 driver, Christian Lundgaard, was penalized for getting involved in another driver's crash. He dropped back from the provisional pole to the sixth place as a result.
The win was more impressive, considering he revealed that he only started getting acquainted with the game days before.
It was also the best chance his brother got to race against him on a Formula 1 grid even though it was virtual.
Arthur LeClerc did not match the performance given by his elder brother on the Formula 1 ESports debut, but he did give a good performance. He managed to finish in the fourth position, and he managed a spirited battle with Formula 2 driver, Christian Lundgaard.
Within the midfield, it was a matter of Formula 1's past versus the present considering the 2009 world champion, Jenson Button, was racing against current Red Bull star, Alex Albon.
Albon attacked hard though Button was not about to give up without a fight.
George Russell, Lando Norris, and Albon were enjoying the banter during the buildup and over their headsets though Albon's chances of a great result disappeared following the opening lap.
He crashed out of the high-speed turn 12.
At the time, it dropped him behind Ben Stokes in the other Red Bull though Albon did manage to climb his way back up to the eighth position.
Jimmy Broadbent in the Racing Point and Nicholas Latifi from Williams rounded out the top ten. Latifi took the chance away from Pietro Fittipaldi with the Haas reserve driver crashing.
Several drivers picked up penalties for cutting corners, including multiples for Johnny Herbet, who finished 17th position for Alfa Romeo.
Several drivers were making their debuts, such as Albon and Button. The hope is more drivers are going to enter the virtual tournament.
