‘Charmed’ Stars React To Major Season 2 Changes After Shocking Premiere
The “Charmed” Season 2 premiere may have shocked fans. The episode ended with the revelation that Harry is the last remaining whitelighter, and there’s now a world full of unprotected witches. The Charmed Ones (and their house) have moved to Seattle to start new lives, and Harry survived an attack by a doppelganger assassin. The “Charmed” cast at New York Comic Con told International Business Times that they were pretty shocked by the first script.
“‘We can’t do that!’ That was my reaction,” Macy actress Madeleine Mantock told IBT and a small group of reporters at NYCC.
Rupert Evans, who plays Harry, was also surprised. “I think some of us were really unsure like, ‘Yeah hold on a sec. That's like crazy.’ But, you know, I think in retrospect in hindsight it kind of has worked. And I think you allowed us to kind of go in different routes,” he said.
“Yes, I mean, we're in it now,” Mantock added. “So it's kind of it's almost like episode one is like a pilot again. We needed to be able to reset and it affords us that opportunity. So I hope that people are forgiving with some of the things that we had to do to make that happen.”
The episode definitely changed the course of the series, and it also alters some of the core relationships. Melonie Diaz, who plays Mel, says that Harry’s dilemmas put him and the Charmed Ones on a level playing field.
“What I also like about it too is that we're also equal. You know we're the Charmed Ones and he's the last [whitelighter]. But I don't feel like he's more of our teacher anymore. He’s like our colleague, and I think that's pretty rad. I think that we are powerful enough to be in charge of our own ship,” she explained.
Evans also revealed that Harry’s origins will be explored in “Charmed” Season 2, episode 5, but Harry won't keep his demonic doppelganger secret for that long. He'll have to tell the girls about his mysterious stabbing in episode 2 on Friday.
More pressingly, though, the Charmed Ones will be trying to protect the witches who no longer have whitelighters. That map was filled with glowing dots representing thousands of witches around the world, and the Charmed Ones are the only ones who can save them.
“For us, this is in some ways an allegory, I want to say,” co-showrunner Liz Kruger said. “Sure, it's about climate change. It's about like you know the world is dying and we may be the only ones who can save it. And that's really what the season is about.
“Obviously we're not saying it, spelling it out that way, but if if you look at it that way it's like, what can three young women really do? How do they save the world? How can they change the world? The answer is you can do a lot. One person can make a difference.”
“Charmed” Season 2 airs Fridays on The CW.
