Chaz Bono to Focus on Dancing and not Gender Dysphoria
Chaz Bono has made it clear that Dancing with the Stars is a dance show, where, like the other contestants, he intends to dance.
I'm going to be dancing. I'm not up there talking about anything other than dancing, Bono said Tuesday morning on Good Morning America. People who don't have gender dysphoria aren't going to catch it by watching me dance on television.
Chaz, born as Chastity, the daughter of Cher and the late Sonny Bono, started the gender reassignment process in March 2009, legally becoming a man in May 2010.
The addition of Chaz Bono in the Season 13 cast of Dancing With the Stars has started out a flood of negative reactions in social networks.
Many are accusing that the series is pushing a homosexual agenda with contestants such as the transgender Bono. But others have praised him for bravery.
Bono was paired with fifth year pro Lacey Schwimmer, who competed on So You Think You Can Dance.
Bono is the subject of the Emmy-nominated documentary, Becoming Chaz. He has also written three books about his struggle to match his gender identity with his physical body.
The new season of Dancing with the Stars starts Sept. 19.
