KEY POINTS

  • Robert Lewandowski has netted 40 goals in Bundesliga this season
  • Overall, he has scored 47 competitive goals for Bayern Munich
  • He reportedly wants to play in Spain next

Chelsea have reportedly contacted Bayern Munich over the transfer of Robert Lewandowski ahead of the summer window amid interest from FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

Lewandowski, who is currently contracted with Bayern Munich until 2023, is more inclined towards playing in Spain than England, reported Sky Sports Germany.

It is understood that Tammy Abraham has fallen in Chelsea head coach’s pecking order and the Stamford Bridge side wants to pair Lewandowski in the middle of Timo Werner and Kai Havterz in their attack.

In 39 competitive appearances for Bayern Munich this season, Lewandowski has netted 47 goals and provided nine assists. The Polish striker recently scored his 40th goal in Bundesliga and thereby equaled Bayern Munich legend Gerd Müller's single-season record from 1971-72.

"I feel incredible. Until now I maybe didn’t understand what was exactly happening because, you know, this is a legendary record. It’s something amazing, something special. To get the chance to set a new record is something amazing. I'll try to do it in the next game, and we'll see what happens," Lewandowski told bundesliga.com after his record-equaling milestone.

Lewandowski’s reported current market value is around $68 million (INR 5 billion), according to Transfermarkt.

Meanwhile, with Lewandowski favoring a move to Spain, Barcelona could hold an edge over their rivals in this particular transfer case but their financial crisis could be a hindrance. Not having won the prestigious Champions League since 2015, the Catalans are looking to reinforce their side this summer. The duo of Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay is also on their target list, especially since they are set to become free agents at the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

PSG, on the other hand, are looking at the 32-year-old Lewandowski as a replacement for Kylian Mbappe, if the latter leaves the club this summer. Mbappe’s current deal with PSG is until 2022 and he has not signed an extension yet amid his links with the likes of Real Madrid and Liverpool FC.
