  • Chelsea is considering signing Lille goalkeeper Mike Maignan, report says
  • Maignan is viewed as a cheaper replacement for Chelsea's flop signing Kepa Arrizabalaga
  • The Blues are also plotting a move for Atletico Madrid star Jan Oblak

Chelsea has shown interest in Lille’s Mike Maignan, who could be a cheaper replacement for goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Following a transfer ban last summer, the Blues bounced back and splurged this summer by signing Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner for a combined £73.5 million ($97 million). Frank Lampard’s side is not slowing down on spending as the Blues are said to be nearing the completion of two more massive signings, Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen and Ben Chilwell from Leicester City.

Despite the staggering amount involved in these signings, Chelsea is still keen on adding a well-rounded goalkeeper this summer. One player the Blues have set their sights on is Lille keeper Maignan, Sky Sports reported.

Lampard’s squad failing terribly in defense last season put Arrizabalaga under scrutiny. A plethora of names emerged as possible contenders to challenge him for the number one position at Chelsea in recent weeks, with the Lille goalie being the latest one.

Maignan played every match for the Ligue 1 club last season and is likely to be released on a fee of around €30 million ($39 million), a figure significantly lower than the rates of other prospects on Chelsea’s shortlist. He has played for France at every international level from U16 to U21 and has also been called into the senior squad.

The 25-year-old is perceived as a cheaper yet credible alternative to fill Arrizabalaga’s spot next season. However, Chelsea has yet to make an official bid for Maignan's services, Sky Sports confirmed.

Another notable goalkeeper recently linked to a move to Stamford Bridge is Ajax star Andre Onana. The highly-rated goalkeeper emerged as a prospect for Chelsea in the summer transfer window. This time, some reports revealed that the Cameroonian has been cleared to leave if any club can match Ajax’s €40 million ($47 million) asking price.

Another top candidate who is expected to be available in the market is Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak. The 27-year-old is currently in his prime and may cost a whopping £100 million ($118 million).

Chelsea is said to have already considered plotting a move for Oblak after the Slovenian star grew frustrated over Atletico’s lack of winning ability. The Spanish side, on the other hand, is now “scared” that Oblak would choose to sign with the Blues.
