Chelsea Handler was slammed by social media users for her "homophobic" tweet on National Coming Out Day. The 43-year-old comedian attempted to take a dig at Republicans by involving Sen. Lindsey Graham in her controversial joke Thursday.

"If you’re wondering why Republicans took a sick day today, it’s probably because it’s #NationalComingOutDay," she wrote. "Looking at you @LindseyGrahamSC."

Several Twitter users condemned her for not only using being gay as a punchline, but also for speculating about Graham's sexuality.

“Not sure homophobic insults are the cleverest means of attacking opponents… Yikes.,” wrote one Twitter user. "These. Jokes. Aren't. Funny." another person wrote to her, while a third said "damn this joke s----."

"Hey, this isn’t allyship," someone else responded. "It reinforces a negative connotation about homosexuality and links bigotry to being in the closet which is unhelpful. This tweet is trash. And you know it."

"Sometimes twitter jokes work & sometimes they don't, but maybe let's all try to a little harder not to make jokes about straight people where them possibly being gay is the punchline!" another user explained. "It makes young ppl think gay = bad."

This was not the first time Handler was accused of homophobia. Earlier this year, Handler tweeted another homophobic joke directed at Graham.

“Holy, f--- f---. I just [watched] the video of trumps bipartisan 'meeting' yesterday. Hey, @LindseyGrahamSC what kind of d--- s---ing video do they have on you for you 2 be acting like this? Wouldn’t coming out be more honorable?” she wrote at the time.

Handler, who has claimed to be an advocate of the LGBTQ community, was rehashing rumors that Graham shot down back in 2010. “I know it’s really gonna upset a lot of gay men... but I ain’t available. I ain’t gay. Sorry,” he told the New York Times at the time.

In April, Handler tweeted another homophobic joke directed at Attorney General Jeff Sessions saying he preferred to be on the receiving end of gay sex.

National Coming Out Day was marked Thursday to celebrate people who have come out as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) or other. The holiday started in 1988, the first anniversary of the second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.

Handler's tweet about National Coming Out Day came an hour after she slammed Kanye West and President Donald Trump's meeting at the White House.

“Kanye West says he thinks of Trump as a father. Guess who doesn’t think of Kanye as a son?” she tweeted.
