Preview: Last season's champions of Europe take on the Europa League winners on Friday as Chelsea meet Atletico Madrid in Monaco.

While both sides will be eager to get their hands on another piece of European silverware, for the most part the match acts as a celebration of last season's achievements.

Since lifting the Champions League trophy back in May, the Chelsea squad has seen a massive overhaul.

Around £80 million has been spent on new talent, largely aimed at adding to the side's creativity. Chelsea earned criticism from several corners for their defensive-first approach in the semi-finals and final of last year's competition and under the direction of owner Roman Abramovich moves have clearly been made to help make the side's play more attractive on the eye.

Eden Hazard, Oscar, Marko Marin and Victor Moses should all help achieve that goal. The early signs have been good with nine points from three matches in the Premier League.

Chelsea's other summer signing, Spanish right-back Cesar Azpilicueta, could make his debut for the Blues on Friday, having arrived from Marseille last week. Much attention will be on his fellow-Spaniard Fernando Torres, though, as the striker goes up against his boyhood club.

Atletico have the opportunity to lift the trophy for the second time in three years, having beaten Inter in 2010 following their triumph in the Europa League.

Diego Simeone's side should also arrive in Monaco on a high after beating Athletic Bilbao 4-0 on Monday. Radamel Falcao was the star of the show once again at the Vicente Calderon as he scored a superb hat-trick.

The Colombian was linked to Chelsea for much of the summer and will be the man to watch in Monaco. Atletico's side is also likely to feature young Belgian keeper Thibaut Courtois, who is currently on-loan from Stamford Bridge, as well as former Chelsea midfielder Tiago.

Chelsea (probable)

G: Cech

D: Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill, Cole

M: Mikel, Lampard

M: Hazard, Oscar, Mata

F: Torres

Atletico Madrid (probable)

G: Courtois

D: Juanfran, Godin, Miranda, Luis

M: Tiago, Gabi

Adrian, Turan, Rodriguez

F: Falcao

Prediction: There should be a good competitive element in this fixture and with the attacking talent on show in both sides, it could well be an entertaining affair. Falcao is always a threat and could produce the goods on the big occasion to show once again why he is one of the best forward's in the world. But Chelsea have quality running though their side and the link-up play between Hazard and Torres could well be the difference on the night.
