  • She jumped from the 29th floor of a 60-story building
  • Kryst won the title of Miss North Carolina USA in 2019

Cheslie Kryst's cause of death has been ruled a suicide. The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner confirmed Tuesday that there was no foul play involved in her death.

Kryst died after she jumped from the 29th floor of a 60-story building in New York early Sunday morning. Her body was found on the sidewalk outside the building, where she was a resident.

"In devastation and great sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved Cheslie," the former Miss USA's family wrote in a statement. "Her great light was one that inspired others around the world with her beauty and strength."

"She cared, she loved, she laughed, and she shined. Cheslie embodied love and served others, whether through her work as an attorney fighting for social justice, as Miss USA and as a host on 'Extra.' But most importantly, as a daughter, sister, friend, mentor and colleague— we know her impact will live on," the statement added.

Following the news of her death, friends and colleagues of the former Miss USA paid tribute to Kryst. "Top Gun: Maverick" star Glen Powell took to Twitter on Tuesday to share a sweet story about her and the impact she had left on his family members.

"My niece & nephew watched me do this interview w/ @CheslieKryst. They said, 'she's a real life princess.' She took the time to talk w/ them afterward and then mailed them signed photos. She was kind, authentic- forever the Powell's princess," Powell wrote while sharing a story when Kryst interviewed him back in 2020.

Kryst won the title of Miss North Carolina USA in 2019. After being crowned Miss USA the same year, she took a leave from work to focus on her Miss USA journey. She was appointed as the first diversity advisor of North Carolina-based law firm Poyner Spruill in 2020 while working as a correspondent for "Extra."
