Chicago Bears, Seattle Seahawks Projected To Be Among Worst Teams After Preseason Game
The Chicago Bears defeated the Seattle Seahawks 27-11 to kick off Week 2 of the NFL preseason. Both teams could find some reasons to be encouraged, though it's expected to be a long regular season for Chicago and Seattle.
In the NFC, only the Atlanta Falcons are bigger long shots than the Bears and Seahawks. Chicago has +12000 odds at FanDuel Sportsbook to win the Super Bowl. Seattle is given an even worse chance to win the championship with +15000 odds.
Chicago and Seattle have worse Super Bowl odds than the Detroit Lions, which went 3-13 last season and missed the playoffs for the fifth straight year.
The Bears and Seahawks both have an over/under win total of just 5.5 victories. Even if the teams exceed expectations, they could miss the playoffs by several games.
Justin Fields was impressive in Seattle, completing five of his seven pass attempts for 39 yards. The quarterback did so while being under constant pressure, a theme that's expected to continue throughout the season. Fields is being pressured on 44% of his dropbacks in the preseason, according to ESPN.
Chicago's offensive line is viewed as one of the worst units in the NFL. The Bears could have a difficult time evaluating their second-year quarterback if he doesn't have much time to throw the ball.
As a rookie, Fields threw for 1,870 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Fields added 420 yards and two scores on the ground.
While there's no doubt that Fields will be Chicago's starting quarterback, but Seattle hasn't settled on a No. 1 signal caller. Drew Lock and Geno Smith are engaged in one of the NFL's few quarterback competitions. Lock missed Thursday's game with COVID-19.
Smith got the start against the Bears and didn't exactly seize the starting job. The veteran didn't lead any touchdown drives. The Seahawks didn't get into the end zone until the fourth quarter.
No matter who gets the nod in Seattle, neither player is expected to come close to matching Russell Wilson's production. Smith is a career backup, and Lock was unable to hold onto the starting job with the Denver Broncos. By trading Wilson in the offseason, the Seahawks might've ensured that they'll be picking near the top of the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Seahawks went 7-10 in the 2021 season. The Bears posted a 6-11 record.
