'Chicago Fire,' 'Chicago P.D.' and 'Chicago Med' January Crossover Plot To Deal With Voight's Late Wife
"Chicago Fire" Season 4 started with a bang Tuesday night, but it's just the beginning of drama in 51 to come this season. While the story will continue to unfold for Severide (Taylor Kinney), Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Dawson (Monica Raymund), you can expect the other Chicago dramas to get involved. A major three show crossover in January between "Chicago Fire," "Chicago P.D." and the new "Chicago Med" will focus on Voight (Jason Beghe).
Showrunner Matt Olmstead confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that there will be a crossover between the three shows after executive producer Derek Haas shared the news on Twitter in September. Olmstead said they are still working on the three show crossover event, but one thing he knows for sure is that it will involve Chicago P.D.'s Voight and the back story of his late wife.
"We've established that she died years prior to when he appeared on 'Fire,' but not the circumstances of her death and what Voight has to deal with in terms of dealing with that memory," he dished.
Lindsay (Sophia Bush) will also be affected because after Voight took her in when she was a troubled teen, Voight's wife was a role model for who she wanted to be. "It really hits them both hard and it's a nice window into Voight's relationship with his late wife. That was so meaningful and profound that when she died, we don't establish him dating," Olmstead added.
Crossovers aren't something new with the Chicago-based dramas. "Chicago Fire" and "Chicago P.D." frequently have crossovers as characters show up on each show. A three show crossover has also happened before with "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," which aired in November 2014 and April 2015.
In the April crossover episode, Nadia (Stella Maeve) was killed, which had a major impact on Lindsay. This impact carried into this season of "Chicago P.D." as Lindsay turned to drugs and alcohol to deal with her pain of the loss after she wanted to groom Nadia to be a cop and show her a better life.
"Chicago Fire" airs Tuesdays on NBC at 10 p.m. EDT, while "Chicago P.D." airs Wednesday's on NBC at 10 p.m. EDT. "Chicago Med" premieres Tuesday Nov. 17 on NBC at 9 p.m. EDT.
