Chicago Gang Violence 2017: 2 Dead, 8 Injured At Memorial For Gang Shooting Victim

At a time when gang-related gun violence is spiraling out of control in Chicago, two more incidents took place Sunday.

A 26-year old man was killed in Chicago early Sunday morning by two people carrying rifles, referred to as "a gang-related murder" by Chicago police First Deputy Superintendent Kevin Navarro, reports said.

Later that afternoon, a small crowd had gathered for a makeshift vigil honoring the victim killed in the morning and at around 5:20 p.m. EDT, firing started leaving eight injured and killing another two people. Among those killed, was a man in his mid-twenties, and the other was a woman whose age is still not known, police told the Chicago Tribune.

Further details about the shooting are not yet known.

Navarro called the incident, “another brazen act of gang violence in the streets of Chicago,” during a press conference Sunday evening.

This latest incident led to Alderman Raymond Lopez telling reportersit was the second time in a week they had gathered to talk about assault weapons being used in the Chicago community.

He said: "Last week, we've seen assault rifles used on police, today they're used on gang members in the Brighton Park community in broad daylight, on a Sunday." Lopez continued: "It's time for each and every one of us to start looking at what's going on on our blocks -- identifying who is the gang member, who are the drug dealers and who is supporting them in our community," CNN reported.

Last week, two Chicago police officers were shot during a shootout with suspects on the South Side, according to authorities. They were conducting a follow up investigation to an earlier incident when as many as two vehicles pulled up and began firing at them, CBS Chicago reported.

The tragic killings is the latest example of violence in Chicago, which has seen more than 950 murders since the beginning of 2016. In the course of the last 16 months, Chicago — third-largest city in the U.S. — has witnessed more murders and non-fatal shootings than combined incidents in New York and Los Angeles.

Police said most of the violence, which has disproportionately impacted black and Latino neighborhoods on the city's South and West sides, is gang-related, USA Today reported.

In January, seven mourners for a woman were shot dead near a grade school, including a 12-year-old boy, according to Chicago Tribune.

In September, 2016, an 18 year old woman was shot and killed while two teenage boys were wounded at a vigil for another man who had been murdered earlier, according to ABC 7 Chicago.

In August 2016, an eight-year-old girl was shot in the arm while attending a vigil for a 14 year old friend shot earlier, the Associated Press reported.

According to a report by Fox News in February, more police security could not stop gang members from committing murders. Gang members said gangs provided structure their parents did not.

“Half of these guys don’t got no mom, either they was crack heads, dope fiends, boosters or something,” said a man who would only identify himself as a member of the Black Disciples. “They moms or fathers was lost to the same gang that we getting ourselves into now."
