Chicago Man Charged With Stabbing, Disemboweling Brother-In-Law Denied Bail
A Chicago man was charged with stabbing his brother-in-law and partially disemboweling him on a Chicago Transit Authority bus, prosecutors said Saturday.
The brother-in-law, who wasn’t identified, survived the attack but was hospitalized in critical condition, reports said.
The assaulter, identified as 37-year-old Darnell R. Scott from Englewood, was charged with aggravated battery with great bodily harm.
Scott is accused of stabbing his 50-year-old brother-in-law at least 25 times with a 2-inch pocket knife while riding the No. 63/63rd Street bus Thursday around 6:30 p.m. local time (7:30 p.m. EST).
Cook County police and prosecutors said the victim suffered wounds to his abdomen arms, legs, neck and the back of his head before the bus came to a stop in the 300 block of West 63rd Street, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Assistant State's Attorney Craig Taczy told the court that Scott’s attack left the victim partially disemboweled. Scott was also injured in the altercation, and sat with a heavily bandaged hand in the court while the charges were being read.
Detailing the incident, Taczy said it all began when Scott got on the bus and passed by his brother-in-law who was already sitting in it without saying a word to him.
The two didn't share a cordial relationship and hadn't spoken for some time, Taczy said.
A fight erupted when the older man approached Scott at the back of the bus. During the fight, Scott pulled out a knife and stabbed his brother-in-law, while the other commuters on the bus recorded the whole incident, Taczy said, New York Daily News reported.
According to reports, the arrest report specified that the older man was hit after he asked Scott whether he had sent people to “jump him."
Chicago Tribune reports that the victim was taken to Stroger Hospital after the incident and is said to be recovering from his injuries. Scott was arrested after getting off the bus; he was also taken to hospital to tend to his injuries.
Cook County Judge John F. Lyke Jr. noted that the brother-in-law first approached Scott, but denied him bail as prosecutors argued that Scott threw the first punch.
As of now, Scott has been asked not to contact the victim and is scheduled to appear in court next week. The judge also ruled that Scott, a father of three, could seek a reduced bond at his next hearing.
In another incident involving multiple stabbings, a father-of-two was stabbed 10 times by a man in East London and spent a week recovering from his injuries in hospital.
Metropolitan police released a footage of the incident that took place in October 2016, when the victim was attacked as he walked down Pelham Avenue.
After spending two days in a coma and undergoing surgery, the man finally recovered. The police then said the attack was being treated as an attempted murder as nothing was stolen from the man after he was stabbed.
