Chicago, Illinois -- Among the survivors of Monday's mass shooting during a July 4th parade in downtown Highland Park was a 2-year-old boy, who was found below his unconscious father's body.
The toddler, Aiden McCarthy, was at the event with his mother and father, Irina McCarthy and Kevin McCarthy, when 21-year-old area native Robert E. Crimo III opened fire into the crowd from the roof of the Ross Cosmetics building at around 10 a.m.
Irina and Kevin, aged 35 and 37, respectively, were among the seven fatalities in the shooting.
Kevin, who got shot in the leg, died protecting Aiden, his father-in-law, Michael Levberg, said.
"He had Aiden under his body when he was shot," Levberg told the Chicago Sun-Times.
The boyfriend of Lauren Silva, a 38-year-old former event planner who was at the scene, found Aiden underneath Kevin while the father was still unconscious and rescued the child.
"My boyfriend handed me this little boy and said he was underneath this father who was shot in the leg. They were trying to stop the bleeding, so I brought the boy downstairs into the garage," Silva was quoted by the New York Post as saying.
Aiden allegedly "kept asking if mom and dad are going to come back soon."
Lavberg later picked up Aiden at the Highland Park police station.
Aiden has now been "left in the unthinkable position; to grow up without his parents," according to a verified GoFundMe campaign raising money to support the child.
"Aiden will be cared for by his loving family, and he will have a long road ahead to heal, find stability, and ultimately navigate life as an orphan. He is surrounded by a community of friends and extended family that will embrace him with love, and any means available to ensure he has everything he needs as he grows," the page's description read.
The campaign has exceeded its initial $500,000 goal and raised $1,869,450, as of press time.
Crimo, who also wounded at least 46 other people, has been arrested and charged with seven counts of first-degree murder, according to the Guardian.
He faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole should he be convicted, according to Lake County's state attorney, Eric Rinehart.
