The students of a U.K. school were forced to hide underneath their desks after a group of knife-wielding teenagers broke into the campus. The situation was brought under control after armed police reached the scene and nabbed the suspects.
The incident took place Tuesday at around 9:30 a.m. local time. West Midlands Police told the Birmingham Mail that three persons brandishing a blade were spotted in Kingstanding, north Birmingham before they ran onto the school grounds.
"We were called to reports of three young men seen with a knife in Warren Road, Kingstanding, Birmingham, at just before 9.30 am today (Tuesday)," a parent told Birmingham Live.
All three teens were arrested by the police. As the tense encounter between the cops and the group unfolded, the school was put on a lockdown, and students were asked to sit on the floor underneath their desks for cover, Bestinau reported.
"Following an incident in the community, earlier today NBA went into lockdown in line with the academy’s procedures," a spokesperson for E-ACT, which runs the Academy, told XKLSV. "The police were in attendance and the issue was resolved quickly."
There were students as young as 11 years old at the school when the incident took place. There was no word on injuries and the classes were resumed after the arrests were made.
"Thanks to the rapid response of our staff in managing the situation, no students were at risk, and the normal day resumed quickly with students returning to their lessons," the spokesperson told the outlet.
The detainees will remain in police custody while the deputies continue to investigate the case. Police didn't release the names of the suspects.
The incident comes after 19 students and 2 teachers were killed by an 18-year-old gunman who opened fire in Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas in what is described as the second-deadliest school shooting in the U.S. after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in 2012. The deranged assailant who opened fire in the Texas school, identified as Salvador Ramos, was gunned down after armed forces reached the site.
