Chris Pratt Talks About Lending His Voice To Mario's Character: 'Unlike Anything You’ve Heard'
Chris Pratt opened up lending his voice to the iconic character from the Nintendo game, Super Mario in an upcoming untitled animated movie slated for release the following year. The actor shared that the audience will hear an "updated" version of Mario's voice, which they have never heard before.
"I worked really closely with the directors and trying out a few things and landed on something that I’m really proud of and can’t wait for people to see and hear," Pratt told Variety in an interview published Thursday.
The 43-year-old actor went on to explain that it is not going to be a live-action movie and he is not going to wear a plumber suit like the iconic character in the video games.
"It’s an animated voiceover narrative. It’s not a live-action movie. I’m not gonna be wearing a plumber suit running all over," he added. "I’m providing a voice for an animated character, and it is updated and unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before."
Pratt's comments came after animation company, Illumination's CEO Chris Meledandri shared his thoughts about casting the actor to voice Mario.
"Chris was cast because we felt he could give a great performance as Mario," Meledandri told Variety earlier this week. "And now that we’ve done about 15 recording sessions, and the movie is three-quarters done, I sit here and say that I love his performance as Mario."
"I think we’re gonna be just fine. Especially because he’s (Pratt) given such a strong performance," Meledandri added.
The untitled Mario movie is slated to release in theatres on April 7, 2023. While Pratt is giving his voice to Mario, actress Anya Taylor-Joy will lend her voice to Princess Peach's character.
Charlie Day will voice the character of Mario’s brother, Luigi while Seth Rogan will lend his voice for another popular character from the iconic video game series named Donkey Kong. Jack Black, meanwhile, will lend his voice to Mario’s enemy Bowser.
Besides this animated movie, Pratt will work in the movies like "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special," "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," "Garfield" and "Cowboy Ninja Viking." He will also appear in the TV series, "The Terminal List," which is slated to release next week.
