Chris Wallace is leaving Fox News after nearly two decades to work for CNN's new streaming platform.
The longtime "Fox News Sunday" host, 74, announced during his morning broadcast Sunday that he would no longer be hosting the weekly show. He anchored the series since 2003.
"After 18 years, I have decided to leave Fox," Wallace said, as quoted by People. "I want to try something new, to go beyond politics, to all the things I'm interested in."
"I'm ready for a new adventure, and I hope you'll check it out," he continued, adding, "and so, for the last time, dear friends, that's it for today. Have a great week. And I hope you'll keep watching Fox News Sunday."
Shortly after he signed off, CNN released a press announcement welcoming Wallace to its new streaming service CNN+, which will launch in 2022. It included a statement from Wallace, who said that he was "thrilled" and "excited" about "exploring the world of streaming."
"I look forward to the new freedom and flexibility streaming affords in interviewing major figures across the news landscape — and finding new ways to tell stories," he was quoted in the statement. "As I embark on this adventure, I am honored and delighted to join Jeff Zucker and his great team. I can't wait to get started."
In a statement on Twitter, CNN said Wallace's new weekday show will feature interviews with newsmakers from various fields, including politics, business, sports and culture. The new show will be available when its streaming platform launches early next year.
Some Twitter users were not happy with Wallace's shift because they would need to pay for a subscription to continue watching him. But some remained supportive of the host and praised CNN for getting him on board.
"What the hell is CNN+? I'm not paying for no more new subscription app services," one wrote. "Stop trying to get us to watch/pay for another damn app. I pay cable. So put him on the damn show we all pay for," another added.
One Twitter user called Wallace "a great pick for CNN."
"I will watch Chris Wallace with pleasure now. Couldn't stand watching the Fox channel even for him before," another wrote.
In 2017, Wallace inked a multi-year contract to remain at Fox News Channel past the 2020 election.
A number of Fox News anchors are set to host "Fox News Sunday" in rotation until a permanent replacement for Wallace is found, the network said in a statement obtained by People.
