Christina Aguilera arrested for public drunkenness
It is safe to say that this has not been the best month for singer Christina Aguilera.
After fumbling the National Anthem at the Super Bowl and tripping on the Grammy stage, TMZ is reporting that the pop star was arrested at 2:45 a.m. for public intoxication near the Sunset Strip.
TMZ reports that Aguilera appeared to be extremely intoxicated and was unable to take care of herself.
Her boyfriend, Matthew Rutler, was also arrested for driving under the influence.
Aguilera was booked at the West Hollywood Sheriff's substation. She was listed as 5'2 and 100 pounds.
The police initially pulled over Rutler after they noticed he was driving irregularly. According to the L.A. Country Sheriff's Department, Rutler's bail was set at $30,000.
Sheriff spokesman Steve Whitemore said that the 30-year-old singer was very cooperative, according to the Associated Press.
She was booked, she was fingerprinted and she was put in a cell, he said. And then she's monitored, and as she gets better, she begins to fend for herself, her head clears up and when she passes the sobriety test within the jail facility ... that's why we take them into custody, to protect them as well as other.
Whitemore said that Aguilera stated she wanted to leave as she was starting to get better.
When she was able to navigate and think on her own ... she was released, he said.
TMZ is also reporting that the singer's friends have been trying to get her into a rehab program for weeks now.
To avoid the crowd of paparazzi waiting outside, Aguilera was released from the back of the police station at 7:30 a.m. She was taken home by a friend.
Whitemore explained that Aguilera won't be charged with a crime, although the misdemeanor arrest will remain on her record.
Technically it's an arrest, but from the very beginning there was never an intention to prosecute, he said.
Aguilera recently split from her husband, Jordan Bratman, a music executive. The two have a three-year-old son together.
