Red for Santa’s suit … or red for spilled blood. Everybody gets in the holiday spirit in their own way, and for some that involves Christmas horror movies. Whether you’ve been singing Christmas carols this year or screaming in the parking lot of your local mall, we’ve compiled eight Christmas horror movies from past and present that are bound to have you saying, “Ho, Ho, Oh No!”
“Gremlins” (1984)
A father gets his son a creature called a Mogwai for Christmas and chaos ensues when they don’t follow the three specific instructions in caring for it.
“Don’t open Till Christmas” (1984)
A serial killer is on the loose looking to murder anyone in a Santa suit in London. It’s up to Scotland Yard to stop him “before he makes his exploits an annual tradition.”
“Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker” (1992)
The original “Silent Night, Deadly Night” was released in 1984, but this one takes the cake. Mickey Rooney (who protested the first film) stars as a murderous Santa Claus/toy maker who creates murderous toys that go on a killing spree.
“Santa Claws” (1996)
A clever take on the name “Santa Claus,” the 1996 film is about a B-horror movie actress who is “stalked by a deranged fan bent on claiming her for himself.” So, how does Santa Claus play into the picture? The woman’s deranged fan goes around killing her co-stars with a “claw” … while dressed in a Santa Claus costume.
“Jack Frost” (1997)
A serial killer on his way to his execution crashes into a genetics truck. The crash causes his body to melt but he’s far from dead -- he’s transformed into a killer snowman who is bent on seeking revenge against the man who caught him.
“Santa’s Slay” (2005)
In this tale, Santa was Satan’s only son who lost a bet and was forced to spread Christmas joy. However, that bet wasn’t permanent, and Santa’s now on the loose trying to spread holiday fear. Dead End.
“Black Christmas” (2006)
The remake of the 1974 classic stars Katie Cassidy (“Arrow”), Lacey Chabert (“Mean Girls”) and Michelle Trachtenberg (“Gossip Girl”) as sorority sisters who have the misfortune of living in an escaped maniac’s house who murdered his family on Christmas Eve. Now he’s escaped and wants to come home.
“Silent Night” (2012)
There’s an urban legend about a man who dresses as Santa Claus and kills those that have been naughty -- well, one small town discovers that “Christmas Eve is the scariest night of the year.”
