If you've been in a Starbucks or mall in the past month, you've probably heard Christmas music — or, rather, Muzak — blasting through the speakers. Every artist on the planet has put out at least one cover of a holiday-themed song, and during December they dominate the airwaves and your eardrums.

People have been singing songs at winter celebrations for centuries, but they were primarily written in Latin, according to WhyChristmas.com. By the 1400s, writers were sharing carols in their own languages, and the rest is history.

Whether they're old-timey carols or new-age remixes, there's something for everyone to enjoy in the run-up to Christmas. We've put together a playlist of our favorite classics and covers to play at your next holiday party. Just add eggnog and a Santa hat.
