Chrysler Recall: Some Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango Vanity Mirrors Could Catch On Fire

Chrysler Group LLC announced Friday a recall of 895,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos over fire concerns in the vanity mirror lights in vehicles that had those lights serviced.

The Auburn Hills, Michigan, car company said it was aware of three injuries and 62 reports of fire incidents linked to faulty wiring that led to short circuits. The recall affects some of the SUVs in the 2011 to 2014 model years.

Chrysler said vehicles aren't subject to the fire risk if they weren't “involved in a repair related to servicing the vanity mirror and/or headliner, the wiring -- located inside the sun visor.” but Chrysler is recalling all of the vehicles to install a component that will keep the wires in place to ensure they don’t get crimped and crossed, which can lead to a short circuit and fire.

The recall includes 651,000 of the vehicles in the U.S. and 68,700 in Canada and Mexico. The rest are scattered globally.

The safety recall comes after the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation last summer into three major fire incidents in Jeep Grand Cherokees. It expanded the inquiry to include the Durango in January.
