ClimaCell App Tries to Beat US Government’s Weather System With Its Down To Minute Update
ClimaCell tries to beat the existing U.S. government’s weather system with its new app.
On Monday, ClimaCell, a weather technology company in Boston launched an app that would challenge the U.S. government’s existing weather system. The model called NowCast is capable of down to minute update which makes it a reliable source of the weather forecast.
To ensure that the most accurate data are gathered, ClimaCell’s NowCast model is refreshed at the highest frequency rate. Daniel Rothenberg, ClimaCell’s chief scientist said that their short-range precipitation forecast is updated at less than five-minute intervals.
The U.S. government, on the other hand, relies on the technology called HRRR, high-resolution rapid refresh model for their short-range precipitation forecast. HRRR updates and refreshes regularly every hour. The said interval comes at a very low-frequency rate as compared to the ClimaCell’s NowCast model making the latter a more accurate and updated source of the real-time weather forecast.
Shimon Elkabetz, ClimaCell’s chief executive declared that what ClimaCell’s NowCast model offers very essential for businesses that need extra accuracy in solving problems. This is achievable as the is said app assures to provide the street-by-street, minute-by-minute short-term forecasts.
Elkabetz proudly declared that NowCast improves every parameter at any time frame, comparing the data gathered by ClimaCell compared to that of the government. The chief executive further describes the result they gathered as promising.
Another unique feature of the ClimaCell’s NowCast is that it is creating all its forecasts from scratch. This is way advanced compared to the 1960s and 1970s system that most weather companies are using today. They use statistical techniques to try to produce something better out from the weather forecast that they have gathered from different governments and blend them together.
Elkabetz boldly declared that the company’s goal is to become the leading private company in the weather space. Although they still have a long way to go, ClimaCell’s NowCast is gaining the trust of the public manifesting to its increasing number of customers such as New England Patriots and JetBlue that turned out to be one of the company’s investors.
ClimaCell established in 2015 now has 105 employees and already acquired $80 million venture capital.
