The story of “Code 8” will continue beyond its short film and the upcoming feature as Quibi will reportedly be developing a spinoff series for the platform. Both Stephen Amell and Robbie Amell are expected to reprise their roles from the independent sci-fi flick.

Deadline reported that the upcoming short-form series would take place years after the events of the movie. The original film takes place in the future where only four percent of the world’s population is endowed with supernatural powers, however, society has treated these individuals as enemies of the state and are being hunted down by authorities. The story focuses on two former adversaries, an ex-con (Robbie) and a telekinetic drug dealer (Stephen) as they are forced to work together to fight against a dangerous trafficking ring being run by dirty cops and some of the city’s most powerful elite.

“Code 8” began as a short film in 2016 that was directed by Jeff Chan and written by Chan and Chris Pare. After the short went viral, both Stephen and Robbie launched a campaign on Indiegogo to raise money for a feature film version of their short. After raising $2.4 million from more than 28,000 investors, production took off in 2017 in Toronto for a release this month in select theaters.

The new spinoff series will bring back Chan and Pare to direct and write the episodes. Colony Pictures will produce the project alongside Chan, Pare, the Amell brothers, and XYZ Films.

Other than “Code 8,” Stephen is also working on the drama series “Heels” for Starz. The show will tackle the world of independent wrestling through the eyes of two brothers running a family business in the professional entertainment sport. Stephen's latest projects follow the end of his show “Arrow,” which is currently in its final season. Robbie has two films in production, the comedy film “Desperados” and the horror-comedy sequel “The Babysitter 2.”

The digital short-form platform Quibi will launch on April 6, 2020.
