An 18-year-old man in Raleigh, North Carolina, has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 17-year-old boy on North Carolina State University's campus.

Daniel Elijah Bayley was arrested Friday and charged with felony charges after police said he sexually assaulted another teenager, whose name was not disclosed, at Lee Residence Hall Thursday night, WRAL.com reported.

Bayley and the victim met each other online, police said.

North Carolina State University students were informed via a Wolf Alert that the victim involved in the case was a boy and not a student of the university.

The alleged incident has sparked concerns, particularly from students who live in the Lee Residence Hall.

"I was in class when I got [the alert] and it scared me a little bit," said Nicole Allgood, a student who lived in the building. "But I wasn't sure what happened or anything."

Wesley Larson, another NC State student, said, "What kind of people would do this? It's kind of a sick thing to do."

According to Monika Johnson-Hostler, with the NC Coalition Against Sexual Assault, her organization continues to deal with the uptick of reported sexual assaults since the beginning of the year.

"We still have a long way to go with public discourse around what sexual violence is and what conditions allow it to continue to happen," Johnson-Hostler said.

As a result of the alleged incident, Allgood and her peers have become more alert and check on each other, especially those who are alone walking out at night.

"We usually check up on each other if we’re out late, especially if we’re by ourselves if we have to walk at night," Allgood said.

No other details about the case have been revealed as of writing.

In related news, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts faculty has been accused of a range of abuses, including rape, in a lawsuit filed last year by students, The New York Times reported, citing court papers.

Students complained of being groped, of being fondled through their leotards and of alcohol-fueled dance parties where students as young as 14 were told to completely disrobe and perform ballet moves, the court papers said.

The lawsuit seeks damages from 29 individuals named as defendants, eight of whom are accused in court papers of having directly abused students. Two dance instructors, Richard Kuch and Richard Gain, were described as the most prolific abusers.

Kuch and Gain resigned from the school in 1995. Kuch died in 2020, while Gain has not yet responded to the allegations.
