Collierville Police Identify Uk Thang As Kroger Shooter
Collierville, Tennessee, police have identified Uk Thang as the gunman who killed one person and injured 15 inside a Kroger on Thursday. The 29-year-old man, who worked as a third-party vendor for the grocery store, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Ten of his victims were employees and five of them were customers. Olivia King, 70, was killed during the shooting. King, a San Antonio native, is survived by three adult sons and attended Catholic mass nearly every day.
"Our family is devastated by this senseless act of violence. We ask that you pray for the repose of the soul of our mother, Olivia," said Wes King, one of her sons. "We also ask everyone for their prayers for all families and friends affected by the events today, as well as for God's mercy on the shooter and his family. Thank you."
"She was just sweet," King's longtime friend David Fraser said. "Kind, polite, thoughtful," added friend Maureen Fraser.
"Nobody wants to go into that scene, I can promise you. There were bloody people running out of that building, and there was not one blue uniform that hesitated," said Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane.
According to Lane, Thang’s criminal history had misdemeanor arrests but nothing violent to speak of. Police searched his home and gathered evidence that investigators are examining.
Regional One Hospital says three of Thang’s victims are in critical condition and three required emergency surgery. The police have no word on a motive or the weapon used in the shooting.
Lane called the shooting “the most horrific event that’s occurred in Collierville history."
