KEY POINTS

  • Collin Morikawa won the 2021 British Open at Royal St. George's in England Sunday
  • The 24-year-old also received the biggest prize in Open Championship history
  • The overall prize money for this year's Open is $11.5 million, up from the $10.5 million paid out in 2019

Collin Morikawa won the 149th British Open Sunday in his first appearance in the event, claiming his second major title in only eight career starts. But how much will the golfer take home after winning the event?

The 24-year-old Californian held off 2017 champion Jordan Spieth at Royal St. George’s in England to win the British Open, just 11 months after claiming victory in his debut PGA Championship appearance in San Francisco, California, in August 2020.

With his latest victory, Morikawa became the first golfer in history to win two majors in his debut at those events and just the eighth to capture two majors before the age of 25.

The purse for this year's British Open is $11.5 million, CBS Sports reported, citing The R&A. This is $1 million more than the $10.5 million doled out two years ago at Royal Portrush.

The increase meant that the 2021 Open winner's payout will exceed $2 million for the first time in the history of golf’s oldest major championship.

Aside from taking home the Claret Jug, Morikawa will get $2.070 million following his victory. The winner of the 2019 Open Championship, Shane Lowry, received $1.935 million.

This year's runner-up, Spieth, will also be taking home a hefty payout as he gets $1.198 million from the $11.5 million pot for finishing second.

Jon Rahm and Louis Oosthuizen will each receive $768,000 after tying for third, while Dylan Frittelli will take home $480,000 for finishing fifth.

Brooks Koepka and Mackenzie Hughes, who tied for sixth, will each receive $386,500. Four golfers who tied for eighth, Dustin Johnson, Robert MacIntyre, Daniel Berger and Scottie Scheffler, will each get $301,500 from the purse.

Other players who made the cut this month at Royal St. George’s will also get varying amounts from the prize pool — from a little less than $200,000 for 12th-placers Viktor Hovland, Emiliano Grillo and Lowry to $25,938 for 76th place-tie Poom Saksansin and Sam Burns.

The British Open's increase to $11.5 million means it is equal with the Masters payout total this year, but this figure is the lowest among the men’s majors. Here are the purses of the majors and how much the winner will get, courtesy of Golf Digest:

  • Players Championship: $15 million/$2.7 million for the winner
  • U.S. Open: $12.5 million/$2.25 million
  • PGA Championship: $12 million/$2.16 million
  • Masters: $11.5 million/$2.07 million
  • The Open: $11.5 million/$2.07 million
