Colorado Shooting Victims’ Names Released: The Story Behind Those Killed At ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Premiere In Aurora
Two days after the gruesome killing of 12 people inside a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., more names of the victims and information about their tragically abbreviated lives is being released.
Graduate school dropout James Holmes, 24, is in custody and will appear in Arapahoe County Court in Centennial Monday morning.
The dead have been identified by multiple media as:
-- Jessica Ghawi: She was a 24-year-old blogger and aspiring sports reporter who recently survived shooting at Toronto's Eaton Centre mall. Ghawi wrote under the name Jessica Redfield and moved to Denver from Texas about a year ago. Of the Toronto shooting, Ghawi wrote: I was shown how fragile life was on Saturday. I saw the terror on bystanders' faces. I saw the victims of a senseless crime. I saw lives change. I was reminded that we don't know when or where our time on Earth will end. When or where we will breathe our last breath.
-- Alex Sullivan, 27: He was attending the midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises for his 27th birthday with friends. He would have celebrated his first wedding anniversary on Sunday. Sullivan's family said police confirmed his death late Friday. He was a very, very good young man, said his uncle, Joe Loewenguth. He always had a smile, always made you laugh. He had a little bit of comic in him. Witty, smart. He was loving, had a big heart.
-- John Larimer, 27: He was a member of the Navy. He was with a unit belonging to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. Tenth Fleet at Buckley Air Force Base. His family told the press that they were notified while home in Illinois. Larimer's brother is now working with the Navy to bring home the body to Crystal Lake, Ill.
-- Rebecca Ann Wingo, 32: She was originally from Quinlan, Texas, according to the Ventura County Star. The BBC reported that Wingo started a new job at a mobile medical imaging company months prior to the shooting. She had a really bubbly personality, colleague Shannon Dominguez told the BBC. She was a pretty happy person. She never got irritated. She was pretty happy to be here.
-- Gordon W. Cowden, 51: He was the oldest victim killed. According to the Denver Post, Cowden took his two teenage children to the theater that night, but the teens managed to escape without injuries. His family said: Loving father, outdoorsman and small business owner, Cowden was a true Texas gentleman that loved life and his family. A quick-witted world traveler with a keen sense of humor, he will be remembered for his devotion to his children and for always trying his best to do the right thing, no matter the obstacle.
-- Staff Sgt. Jesse Childress: Twenty-nine year old Childress was an Air Force reservist assigned to units at Buckley Air Force Base in Colorado. The Air Force said he was a cyber-systems operator.
-- Jonathan T. Blunk: The 26-year-old was a military veteran from Aurora who was killed as he threw himself over a friend to keep her from getting shot, according to reports. Blunk worked at a hardware store.
-- Veronica Moser-Sullivan, 6: She is the youngest killed in the Colorado movie theater. He 25-year-old mother, Ashley Moser, is still in critical condition after being shot in the throat and abdomen, aunt Annie Dalton, told ABC News.
-- Matt McQuinn, 27: He has been tentatively identified but awaiting final identification. Reports are that his family's attorney confirmed his death with the Associated Press.
-- Micayla Medek, 23: Her father's cousin, Anita Busch, told the Associated Press that the news of her death was heartbreaking, but a relief for the family after a day of waiting for news.
-- Alex Teves, 24: Reports are that Teves, who just got his masters in psychology from University of Denver, died trying to shield his girlfriend from the bullets. Originally from Phoenix, Teves is described as having a heart of gold.
-- Alexander J. Boik, 18: Had his life been extended a few more weeks, he would have started studying at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver, the Associated Press reported. A family statement read, that Boik was dating a beautiful lady who was with him at the cinema. She survived.
