Columbine Shooting Anniversary: Five Other Deadly School Shootings
April 20, 2012 marks the 13th anniversary of the Columbine Massacre Shooting.
The shooting, which occurred on Tuesday, April 20, 1999, took place at Columbine High School in Jefferson County, Colo..
The total number of victims at the end of the massacre totaled thirteen, including 12 students and one teacher.
Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the two vigilante students responsible for the shooting, wounded an additional 21 other students directly.
After taking the lives of their victims, the two senior Columbine students proceeded to commit suicide.
The columbine shooting provoked much debate about the strictness of gun control laws and the availability of firearms for youth in the United States.
articles written about the bloody event reported on the nature of high school cliques and subcultures, as well as the role of violent movies and music in the American society.
Hard rocker Marilyn Manson came under much scrutiny soon after the shootings, as Harris and Klebold were known to have been fans of the dark and ominous music. It was reported that during the massacre, the two boys ran down the halls screaming Marilyn Manson rules! while shooting their classmates.
The media quickly dissected Manson's catalogue of music and found that much of it surrounded devilish themes like death and Satan.
The Manson song, Misery Machine, contains the lyrics, We're gonna ride to the abbey of Thelema. The Abbey of Thelema was the temple of Satanist Aleister Crowley.
A feature film, by documentary filmmaker Michael Moore, was even made about the Columbine massacre shooting. The film explores what Moore suggests are the causes for the specific shooting and other acts of violence with guns.
Moore focuses on the town of Columbine and the social surrounding of the environment where the shootings took place.
In one memorable scene from the movie, Moore discovers how a bank in Michigan would give customers a free hunting rifle when they made a deposit of a certain size into a time deposit account. During the scene a camera follows Moore as he goes to the bank, makes his deposit, fills out the forms, and awaits the result of a background check before walking out of the bank carrying a brand new Weatherby hunting rifle.
Just before leaving the bank, Moore asks the teller, Do you think it's a little dangerous handing out guns at a bank?
It was later discovered that during the Columbine shooting, Harris carried 12-gauge Savage-Springfield 67H pump-action shotgun which he discharged 25 times and a Hi-Point 995 Carbine 9 mm carbine with thirteen 10-round magazines, which was fired 96 times. Harris committed suicide by shooting himself in the mouth with his shotgun.
Klebold carried a 9 mm Intratec TEC-9 semi-automatic handgun manufactured by Navegar, Inc. with one 52-, one 32-, and one 28-round magazine and a 12 gauge Stevens 311D double-barreled sawed-off shotgun. His primary weapon was the TEC-9 handgun, which was fired 55 times.
Klebold committed suicide via a shot to the left temple with the TEC-9.
In the wake of the Columbine shooting anniversary, a great deal of debate still occurs, as to what the killers' motivation was.
People still argue about whether this kind of massacre, or ones like it, can be prevented in the future. As precautions in high schools and universities have been taken since the columbine school shootings, it was not the first massacre to happen and it most likely will not be the last.
