Columbus Day 2021: What’s Open? What’s Closed?
Monday marks Columbus Day – the day when explorer Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas back in 1492. The day is a federal holiday in the U.S. that has been recognized since 1937 but has been celebrated since the 18th century.
However, some states - Minnesota, Alaska, Maine, Louisiana, Oregon, New Mexico, Nevada, and Vermont - celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead of Columbus Day, a day that is dedicated to the contributions of Native Americans. South Dakota recognizes Native American Day, and Hawaii celebrates Discoverers’ Day.
In either case, the federal holiday has some businesses and government entities closing their doors for the day. Here’s who is open and who is close on Columbus Day.
USPS
The U.S. Postal Service is closed on Columbus Day, according to its holiday schedule. There will be no mail delivery on Monday, and all office locations will be closed.
UPS and FedEx
UPS and FedEx will continue their pickup and delivery services on Monday.
Banks
Most banks observe Columbus Day and will be closed for the federal holiday.
Stock Markets
