Confederate Flag On Amazon: 8 Ways The Website Has Sold The Symbol Of The South
Following Walmart, Sears and eBay, Amazon announced it would pull Confederate flag merchandise from its shelves after last week's racially-motivated fatal shooting in a historically-black church in Charleston, South Carolina. Before Amazon made its announcement Tuesday, sales of Confederate-related goods grew roughly 3,000 percent on the site in the past 24 hours, according to Business Insider.
Beyond the flag itself, Amazon had marketed a variety of merchandise associated with the Confederate flag, ranging from baby bibs to knives to swimsuits. The items sold on Amazon suggest people used the flag not as a statement but as a lifestyle, showing a symbol of white supremacy touted by Charleston shooter Dylann Roof has become part of the daily lives and identities of countless people.
Retail sites both online and otherwise began a mass exodus Monday of Confederate flag-related items after South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley called for the divisive symbol to be removed from State House grounds. Haley, who spoke during a press conference, asked the state Legislature to vote to take the flag down.
"One hundred and fifty years after the end of the Civil War, the time has come," Haley said Monday in Charleston. "There will be some in our state who see this as a sad moment. I respect that. But know this, for good and for bad, whether it is on the statehouse grounds or in a museum the flag will always be a part of the soil in South Carolina. But this is a moment in which we can say that that flag, while an integral part of our past, does not represent the future of our great state."
