Conor McGregor Next Fight: UFC Star Teases Return, Current Champion Interested
Conor McGregor is getting ready for his next fight. On Monday, the UFC star posted on Instagram indicated that he’s not far from making a return to the octagon.
McGregor has not fought since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 on July 10. The 33-year-old shared photos of himself training and seemingly teasing the possibility of a fight in the not-too-distant future.
“Right hook tastiness, catch you soon the count down is on,” McGregor wrote.
McGregor’s next fight can’t happen until he’s completely healed from last year’s devastating injury. According to UFC President Dana White, McGregor hasn’t yet been medically cleared to compete.
“I literally have nothing for him right now, he's not ready,” White told SunSport.”
White added that things could change in the summer. The UFC will begin to explore potential opponents for McGregor when doctors say he’s good to go.
Alexander Volkanovski has interest in being McGregor’s next opponent. The UFC featherweight champion successfully defended his title on April 9, improving his UFC record to a perfect 11-0.
"Oh yeah, I mean [a McGregor fight always interests me], and it's always going to interest a lot of people," Volkanovski told TMZ.
"It's always going to be a big fight, there's always going to be money, there's going to be a circus, it's going to be entertaining, it's going to be fun.”
McGregor last held the featherweight championship in November 2016. He was stripped of the title after failing to defend it for almost a year.
McGregor’s last two fights were at lightweight. His last victory — a knockout against Donald Cerrone in 40 seconds on Jan. 18, 2020 — was in the welterweight division.
McGregor has said he’s targeting UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman for his next fight.
