KEY POINTS

  • A new super PAC called the Lincoln Project aims to prevent Trump's reelection next fall
  • The super PAC will also take aim at pro-Trump Republicans in Congress seeking another term
  • The group has raised more than $1 million after launching Tuesday
  • The Lincoln Project plans to begin airing political ads on television early next year

Not all conservatives are behind President Donald Trump and his mission to win another four-year term in 2020. In what is a first for Republicans calling themselves “Never Trumpers,” a new super political action committee or PAC, has been formed to see that Trump and other Republicans lose next fall.

Dubbed the Lincoln Project, the new super PAC formed by conservatives fiercely critical of Trump aims to raise funds to be used to undermine both him and pro-Trump Republicans seeking to hold onto their seats in congress less than a year from now. Led by lawyer George Conway, the husband of White House senior advisor Kellyanne Conway, the super PAC has already boasted collecting more than $1 million in donations so far after its Tuesday launch.

The super PAC’s seven-person board includes several individuals who have previously left the Republican Party in protest of Trump’s presidency. Speaking about the group’s goals in an interview with the Associated Press, Conway said he would hope “Anonymous,” the pseudonym of an unnamed Trump insider who recently published an inflammatory book portraying a chaotic and dysfunctional White House, would eventually join the super PAC. “I think the more the merrier,” he said.

Reed Galen, one of the super PAC’s board members and former political consultant to the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), believes the group’s launch represents “a shift from talk into action” for the conservative “Never Trump” movement.

The super PAC will focus its energies on persuading Republicans unhappy with the Trump presidency and independent voters who lean toward supporting Republicans. The group expects to begin running anti-Trump political ads on television in battleground states, which include Michigan, Wisconsin and Arizona, early next year and in states where pro-Trump congressional Republicans are seeking reelection next year.

The Lincoln Project’s work will certainly be cut out for it. Conservative “Never Trumpers” make up a small group among Republicans, who have been overwhelmingly supportive of the president’s administration throughout his term. Most polls indicate that roughly only 10 percent of Republicans are dissatisfied with Trump.

While the backers of the new super PAC hope that the Senate will vote to have Trump removed from the White House, they expect this will only be achieved by voters next November.
