Cops Find Dead Body Inside U-Haul Box Outside Houston Apartment Complex
The dead body of an unidentified adult has been discovered inside a large U-Haul box outside an apartment complex in southwest Houston.
Officials from the Houston Police Department said they received a call at around 2 p.m. Sunday about a suspicious package lying in Bissonnet near Beechnut Street. Cops were informed that the unclaimed box had a bad odor as well.
The first to arrive at the spot were Houston firefighters, who eventually found a dead body inside the large U-Haul box.
"Once the package was found by Houston police, they observed it was a deceased person inside the box," HPD Detective Matthew Hughey said, as per ABC13 Houston.
Officials went through surveillance footage in the area and saw a person using a dolly to carry the box and drop it at the parking space. The investigators also noted that the same man in the video was present at the crime scene.
"In the surveillance video you're able to see a person carrying a U-Haul box on a dolly ... and they drop it and kind of walk away from the scene," Hughey said, according to KPRC.
"I couldn't comment on the reason or his motivation as to why he came back to the scene," he added.
Cops detained one person in connection with the disturbing discovery. No details were revealed about both the detained man and the deceased individual found in the box. Officials have not released information about the latter's cause of death, either.
Though a dead person was found under strange circumstances, residents were reportedly not too affected by the incident because of the number of crimes that take place in the area.
"It's something regular here," one resident, Ashley Garcia, told ABC13 Houston. "Something always happens in this complex. It doesn't have much security. So finding out there was a box with a body, it's nothing that shocking."
A similar incident was recently reported in Queens, New York City after a woman's body was found inside a duffel bag early Saturday. The discovery was made on a sidewalk about half a mile away from the residence of the victim, identified as 51-year-old Orsolya Gaal. Her 13-year-old son was later questioned and released. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
