  • Mikel Arteta says he has recovered from coronavirus
  • He was the first Premier League manager to test positive
  • The league has been suspended indefinitely due to the virus

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has said he feels that he has recovered from coronavirus.

The 37-year-old Spaniard was the first Premier League manager to test positive for the pandemic virus. Soon after that happened, Arsenal’s first-team squad was kept in the quarantine for at least 14 days.

Arsenal faced Olympiakos in the Europa League last month. A few days after the match, Arteta reported feeling unwell. His tests were speeded up after it was confirmed Olympiakos’ owner Evangelos Marinakis had coronavirus.

“It took me three or four days to start feeling better, with more energy, to leave the symptoms behind. I am very well now. I feel that I have recovered,” Arteta said in an interview with Spanish television channel La Sexta.

"As a result of the current situation, we are clear it would be inappropriate and irresponsible to ask players to come back at this time. Therefore our men's first team, women and academy players are all remaining at home. Stay at home and save lives,” Arsenal said in a statement recently.

The Gunners' players were expected to resume training Tuesday, after completing 14 days' isolation following Arteta's diagnosis, but their return has been postponed as the coronavirus crisis prevails.

“I got a call from the board of directors after training while I was in my car and they told me the president of Olympiakos had tested positive, and everyone who had been in contact was at risk. I went on to tell them that I wasn't feeling well and that we had a situation because we had lots of players that had been in contact with them."

"We had a game against Manchester City the next day and obviously we couldn't put lots of people at risk without saying anything. Obviously, all those who had been in contact with me had to go into quarantine, and consequently, games had to be suspended,” Arteta added in the interview.

At present all the soccer leagues including the Premier League have been suspended indefinitely. While there is no concrete information on when will the Premier League resume, there have been reports saying that it could resume from June 1.
