There are currently over 332 cases of the coronavirus in the United States, with the death toll reaching 17. There are at least 84 cases in California, with 50 cases in the San Francisco Bay Area.

There have also been at least 79 cases in Washington state. Ten people have died after the virus spread in the Life Care Center nursing facility in the Seattle suburb of Kirkland.

In addition, there are at least 45 cases in New York state. Around 4,000 people in the state are under quarantine and being monitored for symptoms of the virus.

As the virus spreads in the United States, the Trump administration has sent mixed messages about the outbreak.

Vice President Mike Pence said Thursday that there are not enough coronavirus tests to meet demand, but Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar asserted Friday that there is no testing kit shortage, contradicting Pence.

President Trump has also downplayed the threat of the coronavirus, in order to calm financial markets.

“A lot of people will have this, and it’s very mild. They will get better very rapidly. They don’t even see a doctor ... So, if we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work — some of them go to work, but they get better,” Trump said in a Fox News interview Wednesday, referring to coronavirus. Trump is suggesting that some workers who have the virus can go into the office, contradicting federal health officials.

Yet the coronavirus has had a major impact on the U.S. economy, with the S&P 500 down nearly 11% over the last two weeks. The travel industry has also been hard hit amid the crisis, with the Trump administration mulling tax cuts for airlines and cruise companies.

There are currently over 101,400 cases of coronavirus worldwide, with the death toll at more than 3,400 people globally. The majority of cases are in China, with the virus originating at an animal and seafood market in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
