Cost Of Obama’s Travel, Vacation: President Spent Almost $100 Million Of Taxpayers Money
As President Barack Obama enters the last 10 days of his time in office and prepares for his farewell speech Tuesday night in Chicago, Obama’s final travel statistics and how much they’ve cost American taxpayers have started to trickle in.
Obama’s jaunt from the White House in Washington, D.C. to Chicago Tuesday will mark his 482nd trip during his eight years in office and brings the grand total of his flights on Air Force One to 1,350, CBS News reported.
Obama’s final speech as president, before he attends President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, will take place at McCormick Place convention center, the biggest in North America, and starts at 9 p.m. EST, USA Today reported. The address, added to his remarks and comments, will mark the 3,575th speech from the country’s 44th president, according to CBS News.
The cost of Obama’s travel, in particular, his Hawaiian family vacations, came under some scrutiny last month. All told, it’s believed the Obama’s tropical vacations have cost a total of about $90 million, with the most recent trip estimated to cost $4.8 million for flight, car, security and hotels.
Much of those tax dollars are eaten up by the Air Force One’s hefty operation costs. The two current massive jets, both part of the Boeing 747-200B series, reportedly cost upwards of $200,000 per hour to operate due to fuel, staff, security and navigation and communication equipment, CNN reported.
The exorbitant cost of maintaining and using Air Force One, including Boeing’s contracts, received Trump’s wrath earlier last month after he said the cost to taxpayers was too high. Trump tweeted Boeing’s project to build a new Air Force One by 2024 was $4 billion, however, the Air Force said it was closer to $2.8 billion, according to Fortune.
