Following a recall for raw ground beef by Rastelli Bros. Inc. because it may be contaminated with plastic, Breakstone's has recalled its cottage cheese, because it may be contaminated with red plastic and metal.

The affected cottage cheese may have been contaminated during the production process and could cause injury to teeth, mouth, throat, stomach, or intestine tissue if swallowed. The recall affects about 9,500 cases of cottage cheese that were produced by Kraft Heinz Foods Company (KHC). It was distributed to retailers in the U.S. and Latin America.

The recalled cottage cheese includes:

  • 16-ounce Breakstone’s 2% Milkfat Lowfat Large Curd Cottage Cheese sold in a plastic cup with a plastic lid and shrink band. It has a Best When Used By Code Date of Dec102019 on the case and a Best When Used By Code Date of 10 DEC 2019 W4 XX:XX 36-2158 on the individual package. The UPC number is 0 21000 30053 2.
  • 24-ounce Breakstone’s 4% Milkfat Large Curd Cottage Cheese sold in a plastic cup with a plastic lid and shrink band. It has a Best When Used By Code Date of Dec102019 on the case and a Best When Used By Code Date of 10 DEC 2019 W4 XX:XX 36-2158 on the individual package. The UPC number is 0 21000 12285 1.
  • 24-ounce Breakstone’s 4% Milkfat Small Curd Cottage Cheese sold in a plastic cup with a plastic lid and shrink band. It has a Best When Used By Code Date of Dec102019 on the case and a Best When Used By Code Date of 10 DEC 2019 W4 XX:XX 36-2158 on the individual package. The UPC number is 0 21000 12284 4.

Consumers should not eat the recalled cottage cheese. It should be returned to the place of purchase for an exchange or full refund. Questions about the recall can be directed to Breakstone at 1-866-572-3805, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST.

Breakstone discovered the issue when it was notified by a consumer. The company has received six consumer complaints but no reports of illness or injury related to the contaminated cottage cheese.

“We deeply regret this situation and apologize to any consumers we have disappointed,” Breakstone said in a statement about the recall.

Shares of Kraft Heinz Foods Company stock were up 0.45% as of 11:29 a.m. EST on Tuesday.
