Cowboys Owner Foresees Tug Of War To Get Nod As Starting Quarterback

The Dallas Cowboys need to rely on Cooper Rush in the meantime as Dak Prescott recuperates from his injury.

Regardless, the absence of the two-time Pro Bowl champion has hardly been missed thanks to the efforts of Rush.

Team owner Jerry Jones remains optimistic that Prescott can return in the nick of time for the Cowboys.

But given the impressive performance of Rush, he believes that they may end up in a similar situation that ironically featured Prescott and Tony Romo some years ago.

"If [Rush] comes in there and plays as well as Prescott played... over these next games ahead, I'd walk to New York to get that... Of course, we want Dak to be here next week. That's the thing, you do. But Dak and I want Rush to lead the team to a victory here and get another win. Looking back, when Dak was playing instead of Tony, it was game by game," Jones said in a report by The Athletic.

"So do I think that it's possible for Rush to come in here and play at a level and win games the way Prescott did when he took over for Romo?" he continued. "Yes. I do. Yes, I do. I certainly think that's possible."

Jones was also asked about the possibility of seeing Rush take over as starting quarterback even with Prescott back in the fold.

"Well, it was impossible, ostensibly, that Prescott could play that well [years ago] and keep Romo out of the game," the 79-year-old stated.

It appears that for now, Dallas will go with the flow.

Rush is fresh off his second-career start and led the team to wins over the Minnesota Vikings and Cincinnati Bengals.

Rush will try to keep the momentum going when the Cowboys face the New York Giants in Week 3.

There remains no official word on when Prescott can return for Dallas.

However, Jones bared there is a chance that the 2016 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year may return on October 2 when they face the Washington Commanders.
