‘Criminal Minds’ Season 12 Spoilers: Is Matthew Gray Gubler Leaving CBS Show? Episode 13 Is Titled ‘Spencer’
“Criminal Minds” underwent myriad changes, both on-screen and off-screen, last year. Soon after Shemar Moore exited the series, Thomas Gibson was fired after he was involved in an on-set altercation with a show’s writer and producer while filming Season 12. Now, fans are worried that another actor may be saying goodbye to the crime drama.
Season 12, episode 13 of the show is ominously titled “Spencer.” When Moore left the show, his last episode was titled “Derek.” In that episode, the FBI Agent was mercilessly tortured by his captors before his team found him. Is Dr. Spencer Reid’s portrayer Matthew Gray Gubler also leaving “Criminal Minds”?
Fans got even more worried when they discovered that Kirsten Vangsness, who plays tech genius Penelope Garcia on the CBS series, has penned the episode. She also wrote Moore’s last episode. Could these two big clues mean that Gubler is leaving the show for good?
Vangsness spoke to TVLine and said that the upcoming Reid-heavy episode will be an eventful hour. “I seem to co-write the episodes that change the course for people,” Vangsness said. “That does not mean the ends of people, it just changes their course. So [episode 13] is a course changer. It’s a course changer.”
Although the “Criminal Minds” actor and writer assured fans that Reid wasn’t going to die, she hasn’t said anything about his departure from the BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit).
Back in November 2016, the series’ co-executive producer, Harry Brig, shared the title of the episode while scouting for locations. In a tweet, Brig shared the title, director and writers of episode 13. When a concerned fans asked him if Gubler was leaving “Criminal Minds,” he told him/her to “Relax.”
If Gubler does leave the series, “Criminal Minds” might have a hard time bouncing back.
However, it could also be that “Spencer” focuses on Reid and his mother Diana’s (Jane Lynch) storyline.
“Criminal Minds” Season 12 airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EST on CBS.
