Cris Cyborg Sets Sights On Getting Payback For Only UFC Loss
KEY POINTS
- Cris Cyborg is still waiting for a chance to get a rematch against Amanda Nunes
- Cyborg plans to fight for at least three more years
- Nunes' rematch with Julianna Pena may happen somewhere between July and August
There was a time when Cris Cyborg lorded it over the UFC women’s featherweight division.
After debuting in 2016, the 36-year-old appeared unstoppable.
However, her run came to a shocking end in December 2018 after she lost via knockout to Amanda Nunes in the first round at UFC 232.
It was the second to the last match of Cris Cyborg before eventually making the jump to Bellator.
Although years have passed since that unexpected loss, the current Bellator women's featherweight champion has not closed the book on her rivalry with “The Lioness.”
In a report from TMZ Sports, Cris Cyborg admitted that she is still gunning for a rematch against the 33-year-old fighter.
“Yes, of course. You know in the beginning after the loss I said I wanted a rematch… Maybe in the future. We never know in the future, only God knows,” Cyborg stated.
Cyborg seems bent on getting back that loss even if it would happen in a different organization.
“For sure. Maybe in a different organization, we [are] going to make the fight happen. You never know,” she added.
For now, Cyborg is focusing on her next fight.
She is set to face Arlene Blencowe at Bellator 279 on Saturday, April 23. It will be the second time that she will be facing "Angerfist."
Both fighters clashed at Bellator 249 with Cyborg winning via submission, successfully defending her belt.
As far as how long she intends to keep on fighting, the Brazilian-American is hoping to fight for at least three more years.
Given that period, it will be interesting if a Cyborg vs. Nunes II can be done.
For now, Nunes is also trying to get back on track after suffering a submission loss to Julianna Pena at UFC 269.
The Brazilian also surrendered the UFC women’s bantamweight title to "The Venezuelan Vixen" in what was billed as a massive upset.
According to Nunes’ coach Balbino Junior, they are waiting for an official rematch date against Pena.
However, he suggested a ballpark date and mentioned it could probably happen either around July or August when he spoke on the Trocação Franca podcast.
“We’re here [in Las Vegas] for two more weeks [shooting The Ultimate Fighter 30], and we don’t have a date set yet, but Amanda is getting the rhythm and we’re doing some training already,” Junior stated. “Since we’re doing TUF and I think the [TUF 30] finals will be on the same day of the Julianna fight, I believe this fight it’s probably happening around July or August.”
