KEY POINTS
- A League 1 star closes in on Cristiano Ronaldo's 2020 goal tally
- League 1 star is reportedly targeted by Manchester United
- Erling Haaland has surpassed both Ronaldo and Lionel Messi's goal stats this year
A League One goalscorer is closing in on Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2020 goal tally.
Moussa Dembele is a former Celtic star who has been on a hot goalscoring streak since the new decade started. Dembele helped Lyon get passed Saint-Etienne in Ligue 1 with an impressive double to take his tally for 2020 to 12.
The 23-year-old is now one goal away to Ronaldo’s 13, the only player in Europe's "top five" leagues who is ahead of him.
The said double takes Dembele's season total to an impressive 22 goals in 40 appearances. This also added more glitter to the already reported interest of Manchester United in signing Dembele. Man United are said to retain a strong interest in Dembele, with Celtic in line for a hefty pay day if he heads to Old Trafford, Daily Record reported.
This year has turned out to be a goal scoring year not only for Ronaldo and Dembele. In fact, Erling Haaland, who has continued his incredible scoring for Borussia Dortmund in Bundesliga,
recorded a ratio of 2 goals per game for his new side earlier in February.
The Norway striker has played only 180 minutes, or the equivalent of two full games. In simpler terms, he has scored 4 goals for every 90 minutes on the pitch .
If Dembele managed to close in on Ronaldo’s trail, Haaland already surpassed the Poruguese star and he’s ultimate rival Messi.
At the Austrian club, Haaland holds a ratio of 1.07 per game beating Real Madrid’s all-time leading scorer Ronaldo’s 1.03 goals per game at the Bernabéu. Haaland has also surpassed Lionel Messi’s LaLiga all-time record of 433 goals in 469 appearances which gives the Argentinean a ratio of 0.92 in domestic action
By mid February, Halaand has already scored 11 goals in seven games which is the most within the top five European leagues since making his debut in January. His scoring tally improved even further when he scored two goals and helped Dortmund beat Paris St-Germain in his first Champions League start for the German side. Haaland has now reached double figures four times faster than any other player in the competition’s history and has scored 39 goals already this season.
Haaland now has ten Champions League goals this season and is only the second teenager to register this number, after PSG youngster Kylian Mbappe.
The stat also impressively showcases that alone he has scored more than Spanish teams Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, who both have nine in the competition.
