Cristiano Ronaldo is on his way to making history and just added another epic moment in his ongoing rivalry with Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo is apparently aiming to reach the milestone of 100 international goals for Portugal, something that no soccer player has ever done before for his nation. The Juventus superstar was very close at 98 before kick-off on Sunday afternoon match against Luxembourg. And as the game progressed, Ronaldo scored and is now one goal away from making history.

During the first half, things appeared to not be in favor of Ronaldo. The talented forward lined up a long-range effort from outside the box early on, but it was one he took more in hope than expectation. As expected, instead of catching it clean, Ronaldo shanked his shot high and wide.

It was a terrible effort on the part of Ronaldo and afterwards, the Luxembourg crowd made sure “CR7” knew just how bad his attempt was. All of a sudden, fans who appeared to be Messi’s supporters mocked Ronaldo by shouting his great rival’s name loud and proud. A chant of “Messi, Messi, Messi” broke out around the stadium, and the Portugese had one way to respond to it, Give Me Sport reported.

As the crowd continuously chanted Messi’s name, Ronaldo scored a goal late on, confirming Portugal’s safe passage through to Euro 2020. Fans was silenced and the legendary striker had the last laugh once again.

Although it wasn't a flashy goal as Ronaldo tapped it in from a yard out after the Luxembourg goalkeeper spilt his teammate's shot, it still counted and Ronaldo now has 99 international goals for Portugal. The scenery was like hitting two birds at one shot as the epic moment was also considered by soccer fans as another memory to remember in the Ronaldo vs. Messi rivalry.

This was quite a déjà vu of what happened last September when Portugal traveled to Serbia for their latest Euro 2020 qualifier. Whenever Ronaldo touches the ball, he was greeted with chants of “Messi, Messi” from the home supporters.

The Serbian crowd was evidently making a deliberate attempt to rile up Ronaldo. They were hoping that by doing so, Ronaldo would be pissed and play badly. However, the home crowd didn’t get the outcome they wanted. Instead, Ronaldo ended up scoring a goal that made it 3-1 with a fine finish in the 80th minute.

After the impressive play, Ronaldo brought out his “Siii” celebration to silence the Serbian fans once and for all.
