International soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriquez announced Monday that one of their expected twins has died.

Ronaldo and Rodriquez said they were expecting twins in October. It was confirmed in December that the twins would be a girl and a boy.

“It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away. It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel,” the couple said in a statement posted on Ronaldo’s Instagram.

It was confirmed that the infant girl is still alive in the statement, “Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.”

The couple thanked the doctors and nurses for their support and care in the statement.

The cause of death for the infant boy was not disclosed. Ronaldo and Rodriquez have requested to have their privacy respected as they grieve.

Ronaldo has four other children. His eldest son, Cristiano Jr., is 11 years old, followed by the 4-year-old twins Eva Maria and Mateo. He also has a 3-year-old daughter named Alana Martina.

Ronaldo’s soccer team, Manchester United, tweeted on Monday: "Your pain is our pain ... Sending love and strength to you and the family at this time."
