Cristiano Ronaldo Captains Manchester United To An Unwanted Record [Watch]
KEY POINTS
- Wolves bagged their 1st league win at Old Trafford since 1980
- Wolves defeated Man Utd 1-0 in the Premier League on Monday
- Joao Moutinho scored the winner for Wolves
Cristiano Ronaldo captained Manchester United to their worst league result at Old Trafford in 40 years against Wolves on Monday.
Wolves defeated Ralf Rangnick's side 1-0 – the away side's first win at the iconic Old Trafford since 1980 in the Premier League, ending a run of 10 visits without a win (three draws and seven losses), according to Opta Joe.
It was unfortunate for Ronaldo to get associated with the forgettable record as he was handed the captain's armband after regular skipper Harry Maguire was ruled out of the fixture due to an injury.
The last time Ronaldo was named Manchester United's captain was in March 2008, during a Premier League match against Bolton, which they won 2-0.
The 1-0 defeat to Wolves on Monday also brought the Red Devils' five-game unbeaten streak under interim manager Rangnick to an end.
Manchester United continue to struggle against teams lower in the table as the loss to Wolves has come just a week after they were held to a 1-1 draw by 19th-placed Newcastle.
The Red Devils now have failed to score in four league games at home in the 2021-22 campaign, which is more than they did in the whole of the 2020-21 season (three matches).
Wolves produced a fearless display against Manchester United as they had 15 shots in the first half – it's the most (since 2003-04) number of shots by a visiting team at Old Trafford in the opening 45 minutes of a Premier League game. Wolves finished the memorable game with 19 shots compared to Manchester United's nine.
Wolves were finally rewarded for their incredible efforts in the 82nd minute when Joao Moutinho struck a winner from outside the box. He became the oldest visiting player to score a winning goal at Old Trafford in the history of the Premier League, Goal reported.
"Moutinho could shoot unmarked with no problems, no pressure. We're very disappointed about the result and parts of our performance. They're playing with four or five central midfielders and we had problems to control that part of the pitch. We decided to change our formation and we had more control – they didn't have as many chances – but we missed our chances and we have to admit they deserved to win," Rangnick told Sky Sports after his side's loss.
Manchester United recorded their sixth defeat of the 2021-22 Premier League and are placed seventh in the table with 31 points from 19 matches.
"Wolves were the best team we've played. We have more problems today than in other games. We didn't press at all. We tried but we were not able to get into those pressing situations. They had an overload in midfield and they played via their wing-backs. We've been only working two and a half or three weeks after needing to close the training center. We had the results. In times we played well but today we have to admit they're better than us," Rangnick added.
Manchester United will have a short break before their next match, which is a FA Cup fixture against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Jan. 10.
