KEY POINTS

  • Cristiano Ronaldo could surpass one of Lionel Messi's goal record this year
  • Ronaldo could break a 26-year Serie A record
  • Ronaldo is expected to set new all-time records

Cristiano Ronaldo could surpass one of Lionel Messi’s goal tally and even break a list of new all-time records this year.

Since the start of the new decade, Ronaldo seemed to have turned back the hands of time. Ronaldo has been proving that age is just number and in fact, ever since Messi won his 6th Ballon d’Or award, “CR7” became the best goalscorer in Europe.

The 35-year-old legend has scored against more international teams than anyone else with an impressive tally of 41. He also has the most Champions League goals and is the only player to score 50 or more goals in 6 seasons.

While Ronaldo has already established his name in history by earning countless records under his belt, he is bound to break even more this year. Should the Portuguese star manages to score on Sunday in Juventus vs. Brescia, he will have scored in 11 consecutive Serie A games, equalling the 26-year record for goalscoring run in a season set by former Fiorentina forward Gabriel Batistuta. Ronaldo will also match the record set by Sampdoria's Fabio Quagliarella last year.

Assuming Ronaldo equals the record this weekend, he will even have the chance to break it at SPAL on February 22.

More importantly, Ronaldo can once again top one of Messi’s records as the decade-long soccer rivals currently share the record for Champions League hat-tricks with 8 apiece. And with the way Ronaldo has been playing lately, it wouldn’t be surprising if he scores another goal to finally surpass Messi.

According to the compilation made by BBC Sport, Ronaldo could also set an array of new all-time records. He is now close to becoming the highest men's international goalscorer. The legendary forward already holds the European record with 99 goals. (Just 10 behind Iran's Ali Daei who scored 109 between 1993 and 2006.)

In June, Ronaldo is expected to become the European Championships all-time top goalscorer. He is currently tied with France's Michel Platini with nine goals in the competition. However, given the two confirmed teams in Portugal's group are France and Germany, things might not be as easy as expected for Ronaldo.

Another notable record to watch out for is the Golden Boot in Italy. Should Ronaldo cop the said award this year, he will become the first player to win the award in three countries.

Ronaldo is also chasing the record for most goals for Juventus in a season. He already bagged 24 goals in all competitions thus far, leaving him 12 behind Ferenc Hirzer who scored 35 times in the 1925-26 season.

And lastly, Ronaldo can equal Messi’s 6 Ballon d’Or awards, a milestone which the Portuguese is reportedly still eyeing for.
