Canadian video game developer StudioMDHR announced that its challenging cartoon adventure “Cuphead” is now officially available on the PlayStation 4.

In an interview with Geoff Keighley during the latest Summer Game Fest stream, the announcement of the PS4 debut came with a new stop motion “Cuphead” trailer reports GamesRadar.

Originally released for Windows and Xbox One in 2017, “Cuphead” was an Xbox console exclusive. A Nintendo Switch version eventually released last year and with this PS4 news, is now available on every gaming platform.

The game was inspired by cartoons produced by the Fleischer and Walt Disney animation studios, along with cartoonists Ub Iwerks, Grim Natwick, and Willard Bowsky. The animation techniques in “Cuphead” thus resemble cartoons from the 1930s, seeking to emulate the subversive and surrealist qualities of the animation studios of that era.

A free “special update” is also set for Xbox in the near future. The update is set to add behind-the-scenes commentary, a playable soundtrack to the game, and a digital art gallery. No release date for the new special features has been revealed so far.

Earlier this month, GamesRadar reports that it was also revealed that the lead characters in the game, brothers Cuphead and Mugman, will also be hitting the small screen in a new upcoming Netflix animated series based on the “Cuphead” game. A teaser shows the characters in action in that same 1930s retro style seen in the game.

The gameplay in “Cuphead” is centered around continual boss fights, interspersed with run-and-gun levels. Each of these boss fights and run-and-gun levels is housed in three different worlds, with the final one being against the Devil himself. The game also includes role-playing elements and a branching level sequence.

The extremely popular “Cuphead” won Best Xbox Game of the Year and Best Visual Design during the 2017 Golden Joystick Awards. At The Game Awards 2017, it won Best Art Direction, Best Independent Game, and Best Debut Indie Game. “Cuphead” also won for Excellence in Animation and Excellence in Art at the 2018 SXSW Gaming Awards as well as Best Art Direction and Best Visual Design at the 2018 Webby Awards.

Studio MDHR is also currently working on the upcoming “Cuphead” expansion. “The Delicious Last Course” expansion is set to see Cuphead and Mugman meet Ms. Chalice, a new playable character coming to the adventure. Expect more news about the DLC to be revealed in the coming months.
