The CW’s ‘The Flash’ Season 5 Premiere: How Did Last Season End?
“The Flash” returns with its Season 5 premiere on Tuesday, but don’t worry if you’re having a little trouble remembering how things left off last. We’ve got you covered.
The CW show wrapped up its fourth season with an action-packed, emotional and surprising finale. Titled “We Are The Flash,” the episode saw Barry (Grant Gustin) and his team working together with Marlize (Kim Engelbrecht) to stop DeVoe, AKA the Thinker (Neil Sandilands), from completing his Enlightenment plan. As if that wasn’t enough for Team Flash to deal with, Cecile (Danielle Nicolet) went into labor at the same time.
These two scenarios were very much connected, though, because the only way Barry could defeat DeVoe was by using Cecile’s pregnancy-induced telepathic powers to travel into the villain’s brain and find his hidden goodness. Caitlin had to do everything she could to slow down Cecile’s labor to give The Flash enough time to complete his mission.
Though he wasn’t sure exactly what he’d discovered inside his adversary’s mind, he found the last thing, er, person, he ever thought he would: Ralph Dibny (Hartley Sawyer). Barry thought his friend was dead, but he’s been alive inside DeVoe’s mind this whole time. Working together, the reunited superheroes defeat the Thinker from the inside out. Unfortunately, he knew what they were doing and transferred his mind to his Thinker chair, out in the physical world. Marlize did what she had to do and destroyed it, therefore destroying her husband.
Always aiming to be one step ahead of Team Flash, that still wasn’t the final step. Breaking his chair set off a kill switch that sent the satellites controlling the Enlightenment to hurdle down toward Central City. The Flash ran off to punch them into oblivion, but he wasn’t alone. The mystery girl, who’s appeared sporadically in the show, showed up to help him.
At the end of the Season 4 finale, Harry decided to go back home to put his emotional intelligence to good use and reunite with his daughter. The rest of Team Flash celebrated their big win, but the party’s interrupted by the arrival of Mystery Girl, who revealed to Barry and Iris (Candice Patton) that she’s really their daughter, Nora Allen-West (Jessica Parker Kennedy), from the future.
It’s only fitting that Tuesday’s Season 5 premiere is titled “Nora” and will be all about this new character and what she’s doing in this time period.
“After an unexpected guest from the future, Nora West-Allen, appears at their home, Barry and Iris must figure out how to get her back to the future without disrupting the timeline…even more than she already has,” according to the synopsis. “Team Flash must work together to send Nora back, while simultaneously fighting off another villainous meta.”
The episode was directed by David McWhirter and written by Todd Helbing and Sam Chalsen.
“The Flash” Season 5 premiere airs on Tuesday at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
