Cyndi Lauper Vs. Madonna: Why ‘Time After Time’ Singer Slammed Madonna’s Controversial Women’s March Speech
Known to be an anti-Donald Trump supporter, Madonna made headlines for her fiery speech at the Women’s March on Jan. 21. Even though the 58-year-old queen of pop later clarified on Instagram that she’s only asking people to channel their disappointment and frustrations into change and love, Cyndi Lauper lambasted her fellow artist, stressing Madonna’s rant “didn’t serve our purpose.”
Following the 2016 U.S. presidential elections, many celebrities have vocally expressed their dismay as Republican nominee and real estate mogul Trump was hailed victor, and one of them was Madonna. At the Women’s March, the “Like A Virgin” hitmaker delivered a profanity-laced speech where she admitted she has thought of “blowing up the White House” because of her anger and frustrations toward President Trump.
Just a day after she delivered the speech, Madonna took to Instagram, which has been set to private, to clarify her rants. In her post, she wrote about choosing love and not being a violent person, while admitting her choice of phrasing was made out of anger.
“Yesterday’s rally was an amazing and beautiful experience,” Madonna wrote, as per Us Weekly. “I came and performed 'Express Yourself' and that’s exactly what I did. However I want to clarify some very important things. I am not a violent person, I do not promote violence and it’s important people hear and understand my speech in its entirety rather than one phrase taken wildly out of context.”
“I spoke in metaphor and I shared two ways of looking at things — one was to be hopeful, and one was to feel anger and outrage, which I have personally felt,” she continued. “However, I know that acting out of anger doesn’t solve anything. And the only way to change things for the better is to do it with love.”
Due to Madonna’s controversial speech, fellow music icon Lauper expressed her thoughts about it, saying the “Crazy for You” singer failed to “communicate any type of humanity.” During an appearance on “Watch What Happens Live” with Andy Cohen on Wednesday, Lauper revealed she’s glad Madonna made an appearance during the Women’s March, but it would have been better if she hadn’t gotten so angry, The Telegraph noted.
"I think it happens a lot when you are really jacked up, feeling your emotions,” Lauper stated. “I don't think it served our purpose because anger is not better than clarity and humanity."
Apart from criticizing Madonna, Lauper also went on to praise Scarlett Johansson’s speech. She said the “Ghost in the Shell” actress shared her story and that it was “clear and eloquent,” adding “yelling doesn’t help.”
Meanwhile, Madonna was slammed for her vulgar language during her Women’s March speech, not to mention the “blowing up the White House” comment. According to Fox News, some even suggested the pop icon should be investigated for her comments. Snopes added that former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said Madonna should be arrested.
In other related news, Madonna reportedly applied to adopt 4-year-old twin girls, Stella and Esther, from Malawi, Daily Mail revealed. However, the pop superstar denied what Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare spokeswoman Lucy Bandazi’s claims about her application to adopt. In fact, Madonna stressed she was in Malawi to visit a children’s hospital for her charity.
